Nueva Vida Church has a medical outreach program where we continuously help people with medical problems that are not covered by the government's free medical care and free medicine for all Nicaraguans. From my experience, the prescribed medicine is never available for free and at times incorrectly prescribed with an expensive medicine that is not needed or could be substituted with another equally effective drug at a more affordable price. For example, a neighbor of mine was sick and the free national medical hospital prescribed to him a kidney medicine that cost USD $75.00 per month. I took the prescription to an American NGO here and showed it to an American Nurse. She sensed something was wrong and looked up the prescription on the Internet and it was not even for the ailment that this poor man suffered from. Pictured above from left to right are a little girl with chronic ear infection problems. We took the little girl to a specialist (out of the government system) and she was diagnosed with a condition that would require her to take medicine for her ear for the foreseeable future, possibly for years. Her visit and prescription, which we paid, cost about USD $70.00. Her mother works in the sugar cane fields when work is available and her father is a fisherman on a very small boat. Buying the medicine for their little girl is totally beyond their financial means.....they would have to give up eating for several weeks to pay this amount of money. That is the way it is here.....if you don't have the money to pay, you suffer and/or die! The middle picture is of the "blue Baby" we have been raising funds for to get her the heart operation that she desperately needs. We received a like new donated oxygen concentrator that the little blue baby is using for oxygen therapy while waiting to be accepted to get her heart operation. The photo on the right is of a Church member who has been diagnosed with stomach cancer and we helped him with his operation. Prayers for all are requested.
